Our Story

Northeast VOSH (Volunteer Optometric Services to Humanity) is an organization of optometrists, medical doctors, nurses, dentists, opticians, and other interested individuals who are dedicated to providing vision and health care to people around the world who cannot otherwise afford or obtain it.

Each year we run a large, multi-disciplinary health clinic, most often in Central American, consisting of 50 to 70 volunteers and treat thousands of patients.

We are a non-profit organization with no political or religious affiliations and all of our members work solely as volunteers. More information on VOSH can be found at the VOSH International website. Click here to visit.

Our Mission

Northeast VOSH provides quality health care to those with limited means or access, both internationally and abroad. Over the past several years, the core of our group has expanded from basic eye care to include other specialties such as cataract surgery, general medicine, dental, audiology, physical therapy, nutrition, and veterinary services.

Teaching is another component of our organization. Since our inception, nearly two hundred optometric, dental, and other health professional students have been sponsored to join our missions. Many of our younger volunteers have made career changes into healthcare or social work follow their first mission experience.

Our History

Our organization was founded in 1986 by the late Dr. Robert Schwartz as Maryland VOSH. Our inaugural mission was February 1987 and Bob led the group for the first 10 years. As we grew and evolved, we renamed to Northeast VOSH in 1996 to better reflect the geography of our membership. Initially focused on eye care, we quickly attracted other healthcare providers and expanded our services while continuing to provide eye examinations and glasses.

NEVOSH has assembled at least one large-scale humanitarian remote clinic in Central America almost every year since 1987. Recently, in addition to our international missions, we have started working domestically with free healthcare clinics run by Remote Area Medical (RAM).
